Museum of Modern Art
Vasilis & Eliza Goulandris
2002
exhibition: Joan Miró
The
Museum of Modern Art (Vasilis and Eliza Goulandris Foundation), continuing the
journey through the great moments of modern art, hosts from June 23 till
September 22, 2002, works of the great Spanish sculptor and painter
Joan Miró (1893-1983). It is the biggest
exhibition of Miró's works in Greece and one of the biggest
worldwide.
Miró
got involved in most of the artistic movements of the twentieth century.
Starting from the influence of the Catalan environment, he dealed with cubism
and dadaism, and turned to surrealism once in Paris. He worked with symbols and
elements originating in psychoanalysis, which had a direct relationship with
surrealism.
His works are governed by the magical element, often too close to paganism, with
references to "divine" nature, moon and night, flowers, sky and sun. He was an
opponent of the fascist regime of Spain, which prevented him from going back
home.
